摘要:Wind turbines are widely used all over the world to harvest renewable energy. To transform more kinetic energy to electricity, the best method is to use longer blades without increasing the blade mass. However, a longer blade without increasing its mass is much easier to bend towards the tower direction due to the wind load. It increases the risk of the deflected blade striking the tower. To mitigate this, there is a need for a technique to sense blade deflection and predict a tower strike, so that controls on the wind turbine can be applied in advance to avoid the tower strike. Furthermore, the key to successful deployment of such technology is its ability to operate reliably in the harsh environment of a wind turbine blade such as high blade tip travelling speed, lightning strike, and unacceptable acoustic noise due to blade surface discontinuities. This presentation will introduce the method of applying UWB technology for wind turbine blade deflections. Furthermore, the antenna and electromagnetic challenges and solutions related to this technology will also be addressed.
